DEAR
ABBY:
I was trying to tell my cousin that the children of one's first cousin
are not second cousins, they are first cousins once removed, and she
said I was crazy. I read this in your column not long ago, but
unfortunately, I didn't clip it.Will you please explain the cousin relationship again? And this time go into the grandnephew, grandniece, and great-aunt and great-uncle as well as great-grand aunt and great-granduncle relationship. Thank you. NEEDS PROOF DEAR NEEDS: The child of your parent's brother or sister is your first cousin. However, your first cousin's child is not your second cousin, but your first cousin once removed. The child of your first cousin once removed is your rust cousin twice removed, and his child is your first
cousin three times removed.
Your second cousin is your grandparent's brother's or sister's
grandchild. That second cousin's child is your second cousin once removed, and his child is your third
cousin twice removed.
The grandchild of brother or sister is your
grandnephew or grandniece. The sister or brother of your grandparent~ your great-aunt or great-uncle. The sister or brother of your great-grandparent is your great grand-aunt or great-grand-uncle. Whew? Isn't this grand? Or is it great? |
RELATIONSHIPS
Your: Second cousin's Son is
your 2nd cousin once removed.
Aunt's Granddaughter is your 1st cousin once removed. Granduncle's grandson is your 2nd cousin. Grandfather's sister is your grand aunt. Uncle's great grandson is your 1st cousin twice removed. Brother's grandson is your grandnephew. Aunt's daughter is your first cousin. Father's first cousin is your 2nd cousin. |
USING
THE 8870
FORMULA
Oh, so old, but tried and true Using the 8870 formula to ascertain a birth
date can be a tremendous help
to the genealogist when checking tombstone dates. If a tombstone records that a person died May 6, 1889 and was 71 years, 7 months and 9 days old but no date of birth is listed, you can quickly arrive at the birth date by using the 8870 formula rather than taking time to count backwards. |
|
Example:
18890506
Subtract
- 71 0709
----------
18179797 Subtract - 8870 18170927

Are
you Kith or Kin?
Kin are your blood relatives,
the co-descendants of a common ancestor.
They are also called "kindred" and "Kinsmen." Kinship can be either patrilineal (on the father's side) and/or matrilineal (on the mother's side). Co-laterals are kin who common ancestors not in your direct line of descent. (e.g. siblings, aunts, cousins,
uncles, nephews and nieces) .
Kith are persons with whom you have a close relationship, not
necessarily by blood. They may be friends and acquaintances, of your ethnic background, culture or language. . (Thanks to The Stovall Journal, 6377 Limewood Ave.,Memphis, TN 38134) |

HERBALS
FROM BETSY
PLANTAIN
Plantain is known to be soothing, antibacterial, antihistamine, and
antiallergenic. Good emergency treatment for irritant insect bites.
This is a common weed in many yards everywhere. Parts used are the
leaves and seed.PLANTAIN
INFUSED OIL
The following is a herbal infused oil. Plantain oil is helpful for
wounds and sores: it encourages the healing of damaged tissue.2 cups of fresh plantain leaves 2 cups of olive oil In blender, process the leaves and oil until smooth. Place the mixture in a small covered jar and leave it in the window for seven days. Keep the plantain submerged in the oil to keep it from spoilage. Press the oil from the herb. Bottle and store in the refrigerator. The Herbal Tea Pot Farm |

| I got the
newsletter information from Fred and Betsy in the past few days.
It is up to me now to get their information put together and into our
newsletter, AND GET A COPY TO Bob Hale so he can put on the Hale Family
Web Site. This year will be our scheduled bi-annual meeting. I hope you all are looking forward to getting together this coming Fall. In past issues we have had some information about several places: Hales location here in the Conway, NH area, The Hale Farm in Ohio, and the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry, Connecticut . There has also been mention of Exeter, NH and other places in the Massachusetts area. These are all quite a distance from a good many of us, but we hope to see a lot of our cousins at the meeting this year. We have to consider a new slate of officers for the coming two year term and we are open to any volunteers and/or nominations for those offices. I would like to try and find out how many Hale Family crests or emblems we may have among our various collections. We have the one I got several years ago that we have on our newsletters, Bob has one he puts on the Hale Web Site, I have one from James Hale that he sent a while back, and we also have the quilt that Catherine McCausland sent. Perhaps we can get some of these put into a copy in the future Happy New Year and best of
everything in the coming year.
